HADECS 3 Variable Speed Cameras

HADECS = Highways Agency Digital Enforcement Camera System

HADECS 3 camera systems are Home Office Type Approved for use on UK motorways. They are used in conjunction with variable and national speed limits and operate using radar technology (for speed detection) along with a system of cameras for image detection.

HADECS 3 uses non-intrusive dual radar for the detection of speed offences in all weather conditions, with lane identification, vehicle position and positive vehicle identification.

A pole-mounted external aspect verification (EAV) system located in advance of the motorway variable message signs (VMS) monitors changes to the enforceable speed limit display and alerts the camera system to set new enforcing speed limit thresholds accordingly.

The cameras work alongside variable speed limit signs on a motorway gantry or, if applicable, the national speed limit. The radar measures how fast a vehicle is travelling. If it is driving above the limit the camera system is triggered and two photographs are taken of the vehicle.

Offence verifiers confirm the vehicle meets the criteria for acceptance and perform a secondary speed check using Redline system.
